1. Someone else cannot pay your bills. You do not have a boss to pay for it, you are the boss. It is great to set your own hours, and take vacation when you want, but when it comes down to it, you have to be responsible for every dollar spent and earned.
2. Constantly coming up with new ideas. Even if you are stressed about money or have too many pieces that need to be made, you still have to keep the design wheels turning.
3. Competition– regardless of your price point, and design style, you are up against 1,000 of designers all vying for the same customer.
4. Going out on a limb and it not working out…. this can be seen in everything from hiring employees, Publicists, sales representation, to spending money on designs and supplies that you think will be the next best thing since sliced bread. You have to take these chances. If you don’t, who will?
5.The slow months…. Don’t give up! Even though it might look scary, that you do not know where your next dollar is going to come from, keep going, keep designing, keep the faith.
You truly win some and lose some as a designer, but the bottom line is, I would not change a thing. It has made me and this company who it is today.
